Captain Don Jones comes
through every time fishing
I fished with Don
2 times during the summer of 2007 with great results:
- The top picture is
Don and myself gaffing an 86lb (felt like 150) Yellowfin Tuna.
The fight took 1/2 hour with 4 deep runs to the ocean depths.
Tuna tend to go straight down and tug hard trying to break your back or
maybe your line. It's not uncommon to bring in a tuna with a hook
and broken line still connected from a previous battle.
- The center and
right picture was a July trip that produced as many football sized tuna
as you could catch. The right picture was 100 yards of breaking
fish... the ocean is alive in Kauai.
- Bottom, you'll see
a full day 8 hour private charter trip ($900)........ I'd say
successful. Shared trips are $175 PP and most tip 20-30% and he
works hard
- Guaranteed
to catch fish
and have a great time.
- Kauai deep sea
fishing is enjoyable but can be tough on a guy. The offshore
waters in Kauai are rough to say the least. I felt seasick
probably 3 different times during the day. I have tricks that
anyone can use to avoid being sick but you must recognize the symptoms
before you lose your lunch.
- Eat a BIG
breakfast 1-2 hours before you head out. Seriously, it sounds
counter intuitive but it works. I have a friend that flew F14
jets for the Navy. He and his buddy's all ate a big breakfast to
fill there stomachs before flying. If you can imagine 2G's
tossing you (and your stomach) around, the sea in Kauai is child's play.
- I recommend
taking dramamine or ginger if you don't frequently spend the day on the
water.
- Only have a
small amount, say 6 oz or less of water. It will slosh around in
your stomach and take you down if you over indulge!
- Eat every 2
hours and bring twice what you think you could possibly eat.
- If you feel ill,
stand up, get away from the motors smoke, and look at land. Never
look down, close your eyes or stare at the water!
- DONT DRINK the
night before! OK, 1~2 cocktails the night before never hurt
anyone but go overboard and I guarantee you'll be leaning overboard.
- If you share a
charter with others, I recommend you work out a deal with the other
passengers first, if they want to go back, they should pay your portion
of the trip or the time lost because Don wont.
